The Community Health Library collection includes medical textbooks, journals, newsletters, pamphlets, videotapes, audiotapes, electronic resources, and Internet access.  The collection meets the needs of both public patrons and medical professionals.  Resources address health topics in varying degrees of complexity.  The collection includes materials covering traditional medical practice, alternative-complementary healthcare, and wellness related issues.  Library staff and trained volunteers are pleased to help anyone who wishes to use the collection.  Journals and reference materials do not circulate but a photo copy machine and printers are located in the library.  Video and audiotapes may be previewed in the library or checked out.

Library Collection

Textbook Collection:  The text collection includes books covering various medical specialties along with materials on anatomy, physiology, public health, and the history of medicine.  Professional textbooks do not circulate.  This part of the collection contains approximately 1,000 titles.  A separate consumer health section contains approximately 600 titles, many of these titles may be checked out.

Journal Collection:  The library maintains a collection of about 100 scholarly journals representing various areas of medical practice.  Articles appearing in journals which the library does not hold can usually be obtained from outside sources through inter-library loan.

Reference Collection:  This part of the collection contains professional textbooks, encyclopedias, dictionaries, drug reference books, anatomy texts, information about rare diseases, contact information for hospitals and medical facilities, and government agency information.  Physician biographical and board certification directories are also available.

The Clipping File:  This indexed file contains recent articles selected from medical journals and consumer oriented health publications.  This file contains articles on diagnosis, treatment, and related issues caused by many different diseases and conditions.  This is often the best way to begin researching a topic of particluar interest.  The clipping file provides readers with an overview and divergent opinions on medical topics.

Electronic Access:  The library has computers with Internet access, scanners, and printers.  Assistance is available to help patrons search and retrieve any information that they might need.

Health Newsletters:  These publications contain articles on men's and women's health, illness prevention, mental health, and wellness issues.

Special Collection

The Edward Hook Collection:  This collection is devoted entirely to prostate cancer.  The material consists of books, videotapes, and patient education items.  These selected resources are written for the public and are intended to assist patients and their families as they deal with this disease.

The Komen Foundation Collection:  This collection is focused on breast cancer.  The material consists of books, videotapes, and patient education items.  These selected resources are written for the public and are intended to assist patients and their families as they deal with this disease.
